So what would be the perfect vacation for a foodie? If you believe that it should in some way, shape, or form involve food – and a lot of it – then you’ve hit the nail on the head!
Aside from the occasional need to get my feet wet and soak up a little sun by way of the Caribbean, most of my trips revolve around food. As a matter of fact, one of my last and most memorable vacations was an extended weekend in Seattle. Known to be one of the best cities to partake, I planned my entire trip around food (and left a day or so open for sightseeing). When you will travel for food, no city, country, or cuisine is out of bounds. Below are a few ways to take your love for food to the friendly skies or at least on a road trip.
La Pitchoune in Provence, France
The legendary, talented, and revered Julia Child along with her husband Paul made La Pitchoune their home away from home during the summer months for almost 30 years. Last year, the small cottage (located in the countryside of Provence) was out on the public market for sell. Since purchased, La Pitchoune now offers two ways to vacation.
Available via Airbnb for weekly rentals, the cottage can become your temporary foodie haven. Not only can you enjoy the beautiful space, but you can cook in the same kitchen as the “mother of cream and butter.” Starting next year, the cottage will be home to the Courageous Cooking School, which will offer a 5 night, 6 day cooking experience complete with cooking lessons, breakfast, lunch, yoga, and more.
A Michelin Food Tour
If traveling to France is a bit out of reach, I would recommend a personal food tour dining at some of the top-rated restaurants in the country. The coveted Michelin Star, which focuses entirely on the food, is a standard in the culinary world that only a very small percentage of restaurants will ever achieve. Because Michelin only reviews three cities in the United States (New York, Chicago, and San Francisco) your choice of destination is fairly limited.
I have yet visit any of these fine dining establishments personally, but my time is coming soon! Since there are only two in Chicago (Alinea and Grace), New York (Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare, Eleven Madison Park, Jean Georges, Le Bernardin Masa, Per Se) or San Francisco (Benu, The French Laundry, The Restaurant at Meadowood, Manresa, Saison) would be ideal choices. Please plan ahead as these reservations are not the easiest to come by.
Wine & Food Festivals (plus cocktails, of course)
A perfect and (most convenient) way to plan your trip around your meal is to attend a food, wine or cocktail festival. In addition to enjoying your city of choice, you can spend your days and some of your nights enjoying demonstrations, tons of food, wine and spirits, seminars, and access to national chefs and culinary stars. There are festivals scheduled for every month of the year, but here are my top picks: San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival (the region’s largest festival; occurs in November), Taste of Chicago (the world’s largest food festival; occurs in July), South Beach Wine & Food Festival (occurs in February), the Aspen Food & Wine Classic (occurs in June), Meatopia (occurs in London in September), and Tales of the Cocktail (occurs in New Orleans in July).
